Safety Ideas Contest
The Safety Task Group at AISC wants to use the strength of the membership of the Institute to assist fabricator Safety Committees in developing ideas for improving safety in shops. In order to accomplish that AISC will post ideas for safety activities on our web site. The intent is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas collected from fabrication shops.
Much of the safety information we traditionally receive is generic or pointed to different kinds of facilities. While much of it is helpful, fabrication shops have a collection of issues and practices that make useful solutions a little different than in other industries. Innovative ideas to enhance safety coming from our own members can be a source of ideas for your shop. Ideas from the similar shops can also be a great way to raise awareness of areas and practices that deserve attention, methods to reduce hazards and simple tricks that have been used to prevent accidents. We would also be interested in tips for compliance and regulations that are easily overlooked.
AISC has established a page on the web site for descriptions of these ideas. We are asking that any person, company or safety committee with a good idea send a short description to Tom Schlafly at schlafly@aisc.org. The description should state the hazard being reduced and be clear enough to be useable to people in other shops. They do not have to include complete designs or procedures. The description should communicate the idea, not necessarily provide all the detail that was necessary to make it work in your shop. Please include the name of the people submitting the idea. While ideas to improve safety are not usually the ones we consider our keys to competitive performance, please obtain whatever authority you feel is appropriate at your firm to release the idea so we can put it on our internet site for others to see. We will have the Safety Task Group look it over and post it on the site. We will credit any submissions posted. In a year, we will look at the ideas and provide a prize to the companies with the most creative ideas. We would also publish tips and reminders for regulation compliance.
