Topics on Industrial Building Design and Design of Non-Building Structures

Designing an industrial buiding or a non-building structure comes with many unique factors to take into consideration--things like jurisdiction and code-related challenges; fabrication and erection tolerances; stability; fatigue; extreme temperatures; crane loads;  and seismic considerations, just to name a few.

This new Night School sets out to provide guidance about managing the common challenges encountered in the design of these structures.

We'll kick off with a session on code provisions and load requirements and review applicable standards and references.

The following two sessions will review the design of industrial buildings with a focus on unique analysis, member stability, seismic design, standing seam roof framing, and more of the aspects that make this process unique.

The course will then address crane-supporting structures and discuss codes and standards; loads and load combinations; repeated loads; duty cycle analysis; design challenges like stepped columns and monosymmetric sections; preferred details; examples of poor practice; and fatigue design for industrial buildings.

We'll also take a cold look at extreme temperatures before addressing various non-building structures including pipe racks, machine support, and plate structures.

Taught by a group of four highly experienced engineers in the industrial building/non-building structures realm, participants will come away with key information and clarity to tackle the design challenges of these structures.

Sessions

Jules Van de Pas

This session introduces the course and reviews the standards and references applicable to industrial structures. The code and load requirements that need to be considered for the design of industrial structures will be reviewed. Emphasis on how these requirements compare to similar requirements for conventional structures will be presented.

Session 2: Industrial Buildings 1

John Rolfes

This session will provide a general review of the design of industrial buildings.  The session will address planning, including project requirements, building layout, roof and wall system and selection of column spacing.  Loads will be addressed including process loads, material handling requirements and load combinations.  Lastly, the session will framing systems will be reviewed.

Session 3: Industrial Buildings 2

John Rolfes and Bo Dowswell

This session takes a deep dive into various aspects of the design of industrial buildings and reviews some of the challenges including unique analysis, stability, horizontal bracing of members and torsional bracing. The session will review seismic analysis, column flange bracing, sag rods and their role, framing standing seam roofs, and more.

Session 4: Crane Supporting Structures

Robert MacCrimmon

This session will address design of crane supporting structures.  Topics include: codes and standards, unique considerations, loads and load combinations, repeated loads,  and duty cycle analysis. The session will review challenges to the designer such as stepped columns and monosymmetric sections, crane support, monorail and underhung cranes.  The session will then discuss crane girders,  fatigue preferred details and examples of poor practice.

Jules Van de Pas

This session will provide an introduction to fatigue based on AISC 360, Appendix 3. The issues of inadvertent restraint will be reviewed and details to avoid these issues will be presented.  The session will present application of the fatigue provisions in a design example.

Bo Dowswell and Robert MacCrimmon

This session will review design considerations in extreme temperature environments. High service temperature topics include material properties, creep and graphitization, and member stability.  Low temperature applications discussion will address brittle fracture, importance of specification of steels and notch toughness.

Session 7: Nonbuilding Structures 1

Bo Dowswell, Robert MacCrimmon, John Rolfes and Jules Van de Pas

In this session, various nonbuilding structures will be introduced including pipe racks, machine support structures with an emphasis on vibration, storage racks, sheet piles and bearing piles. Design considerations, loads and references will be reviewed.

Session 8: Nonbuilding Structures 2

Bo Dowswell

This session will focus on the design of plate structures. Basic geometry, stiffener layouts, design references, loads, details and analysis will be discussed.  The session will also look at buckling of cyclindrical shells, flat plates subjected to out-of-plane loads, and review the design of stiffeners.
