Prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications

The prequalified connections standard has been developed by the AISC Connection Prequalification Review Panel in accordance with Chapter K of the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings. The connections have been prequalified for use in special and intermediate steel moment frames without the need for additional testing.


 The standard (2022) addresses 11 moment connections:

  • reduced beam section (RBS)
  • bolted unstiffened and stiffened extended end-plates
  • bolted flange plate (BFP)
  • welded unreinforced flange-welded web (WUF-W)
  • cast bolted bracket (CBB)
  • ConXtech CONXL connection | patent holder statement
  • SidePlate connection | patent holder statement*
  • Simpson strong-tie strong frame | patent holder statement*
  • double-tee moment connection
  • slotted web (SW) moment connection
  • DuraFuse Frames moment connection | patent holder statement*

*These connection chapters discuss the possibility that implementation of this standard may require use of subject matter covered by patent rights. The patent holders have filed statements of willingness to grant a license under these rights on reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms and conditions to applicants desiring to obtain such a license.
