Design of Horizontal Diaphragms and Collector Beams for Seismic Lateral Load Resisting Systems [N45]

The International Building Code, ASCE 7 and AISC Seismic Design Provisions provide much discussion on the design of various types of vertical lateral load resisting systems. However, not much discussion is provided on the design of horizontal diaphragm elements in the building structure. In this presentation, the author will examine the intent of current seismic design practices and provide direction on design requirements and considerations for the design of horizontal diaphragms, including concrete deck, steel deck and discreet horizontal bracing. In addition, the author will discuss the design of collector beams and determination of transfer forces.
