Have you ever wondered how HSS are made? Does the manufacturing process affect the way we design with HSS? Have you actually ever read an ASTM spec? In North America, there are several HSS specifications to choose from when designing structures. Each specification describes the manufacturing process for that particular product and the quality assurance/control requirements. Understanding the differences in manufacturing methods and what is actually in some of these specifications is important when desiging HSS and helps avoid some of the pitfalls of sourcing the material. We will cover current updates to the most commonly used ASTM specs as well.
